The Fort Bragg Glass Beach is a rare Destination that you can find along the coast of Northern California. It gained its name and attraction status from the small pieces of smoothed sea glass that the beach is covered with.
Located in Mackerricher state park, three miles north of Fort Brag, this sea beach was created from dumping garbage for years along the coastline, near the Northern part of the town. Today around 1000 to 1200 tourists visit the glass beach each day in summer. One can find rare “Ruby reds” that are from pre-1967 car tail lights. But one should avoid collecting stones from the beach to keep from tampering its beauty.
The most-found colors are green, brown, and white, but there are also pinks, liliacs, blues, aqua blues, and yellows- basically, any color that might have once been used for something made from glass. And, if you are really lucky, there are multicolored pieces.
It is rumoured that when a sailor is lost at sea, the mermaids cry brilliant sea glass tears that are washed ashore. In reality the sea glass is not the mermaids tears, but teh aging effects from a local dump that was moved from the area in the mid 60’s- a former dumping ground, turned sea glass Mecca.
#How Glass Beach formed:-
Glass Beach is a beach adjacent to Mackerricher state park near Fort Bragg, California, named from a time when it was abundant with sea glass created from years of dumping garbage into an area of coastline near the Northern part of the town. The glass comes from the fact that this area was a dumpster for trash in the early to mid- 1900s, over the years, the ocean flattened and broke down the glass to what it is today. It is illegal to collect glass at this state park.
#Where the color comes from:-
According to the Collectors at by the sea jewellery, most sea glass is green, brown and clear (which becomes white), which corresponds to items most commonly discarded at the sea, including beer and soda bottles. Sometimes bits of pottery or china emerges from the sea. Lavender, pink, red, and blue glass are rare finds.
#Best time to visit Glass Beach:-
You can visit Glass Beach in Fort Bragg any time of the year. However, the busiest months for tourism and the warmest time to visit Fort Bragg are in the summer months of June, July, and August. If you plan on visiting this time of year, I suggest going to Glass Beach early in the morning or late afternoon after 4 pm.

To get to Glass Beach, take Highway 1 to Fort Bragg, and turn onto WEIM street, which is near Denny’s Restaurant on the corner. Drive towards the ocean, where you will find a decent sized parking lot. It is free to park in the parking lot.
